Age Appropriateness Rating System

At the bottom of every review (in the "General Information" section) are the words "Primary audience." This is, of course, Family-in-Mind's opinion of what ages the film or book is appropriate for. Below is a list of these age groups. These represent the general age appropriateness for a movie or book, though every child and teen is a different individual and can handle things at different levels. The ratings do not imply that a parent will necessarily want to let their child or teen watch every scene in a film.

  • Family: This film or book is appropriate for the entire family. There may possibly be some somewhat inappropriate content for younger children (around preschool age). May include minor violence, minimal sensuality, and brief, mild language. This may deal minimally with controversial issues.
  • Kids (or Children): This film or book is geared for/appropriate for children ages 6-10. May include minor violence and very minimal sensuality. This will likely not deal with controversial issues.
  • Pre-teens: This film or book is geared for/appropriate for kids ages 11-13. May include some moderate language, moderate violence, and moderate sensuality. This may deal moderately with controversial issues.
  • Teens: This film or book is geared for/appropriate for teens ages 13-17. May include some brief, moderate to stronger language (strong language being rather minimal, as far as frequency of use), stronger violence, and moderate to somewhat strong sensuality. This may deal strongly with controversial issues.
  • Adults: This film or book is appropriate for older teens and adults, being geared for a more mature audience. May include stronger language (being moderate, as far as use of frequency), strong violence, and somewhat strong to strong sensuality. This may deal strongly with controversial issues.
